After Hours - The Sith Eleptikal Gems

Those two mixes originally released on mixtapes in 2001 deserves their names! Antwerp based crate diggers and producers After Hours did an incredible work on those ones. Ame and DVL gathered the finest funk, jazz, library and breaks, injected movie dialogs and invited Belgium’s #1 DJ, Grazzhoppa, to add some of his freshest cuts.
Those tapes were released on a limited serie back in the days and now they are available online for the first time, totally re-mastered.
During the last 10 years, the After Hours crew released something like 20 mixtapes and five records…
Some words published by Ame on his MySpace about those mixes:
“The Sith Eleptikal Gems are 2 mixtapes i did back in 2001 with my main hommer DVL. They basically feature all the most obscure original breaks & beats in my collection going from jazz to soul, soundtracks over weird psych rock & library music with a hint of world and so on. All corners covered i guess. In those days i was a fulltime record dealer (my company was called Barriosoundz) providing sample food and grooves to producers and disc jocks the world over. My sh*t blew up when we dropped the tapes, especially cause my dawg Phil Most The Soulman was so good to give me a feature on his legendary World Of Beats webspot. In those days ‘the’ place to be on the internet for anything ‘digging in the crates’ related. Since then there have been many mixes and compilations focusing on rare breaks from around the globe but i honestly feel we were at the forefront of that and broke a lot of records into the scene. Judge for yourself. It’s a nutty trip!”

Bass Culture has been doing it for 18 years now. Putting fever in the dancehall nights made in Brussels. 18 years old. You're a grown up now. From the studios of the legendary Radio Crystal (where it all started), Radio panik, Radio Campus or Radio Vibration; from the Magasin 4 , the Fool Moon, Recyclart, Ghent, Antwerp, Paris and even Switzerland the years have passed . And so did the miles and the nights.
Dozens of artists played and spun at the infamous Bass Culture parties. Daddy Mory and Lord Kossity to quote some deejays. Stand Tall, Robbo Ranx or Pow Pow when it comes to soundsystems. Thus causing vocations and being a pionner in its own niche, Bass Culture is the originator of the reggae/ragga scene in Brussels and in Belgium.

Oskoorland special Jungle

Years ago when internet still sucked and you only had the radio to discover new music ( you had no money to buy stuff in the musicshops because you spended all your money in the coffee shops)everyone had his fetish radio show.
Mine was Oskoorland. I basicly discovered hip-hop on that show. Even dancehall. One time I was taping a show but the tape started the to late so I taped the show after Oskoorland. I went on vacation with only one tape and there was nothing else to listen to so I gave it a try. And after a few listens I became a huge dancehall massive.
Jungle is also a music style I discovered on that radio show.
This particular show was recorded somewhere in 1997 and was a Jungle special. Jungle with a hip-hop twist as it contains lots of Jungle remixes of very know hip-hop songs. Remixes from KRS-One,Raggasonic,Jeru The Damaja,The Fugees, Blackstreet ...
Great music,great show, great ERA.

DJ Lord Issa est un véritable activiste du hip hop dont il a pratiqué toutes les disciplines avant de se spécialiser dans le djing. Pour Issa, la saga débute à la fin des années 80 : d'abord avec celle du graffiti et du tag. Il fait partie de divers crews dont les KTG et TRC. C'est dans cette mouvance qu'il s'invente son premier nom d'artiste : Baxter.
Des années de formations suivies d'une autre initiation, celle de Human beat box et toaster, il écume les petites scènes avec son groupe de l'époque Sangah.

Mais c'est le son qui fascine ce futur dj, plus encore que l'image. Au début des années 90, Lord Issa participe à un atelier de DJ's, il apprend alors les rudiments du djing et conclut cet atelier formateur par une soirée qui fera parler de lui. En 1992 Il commence sérieusement à se pencher sur le djing et débute en animant dans des mjc, des soirées de quartier et des anniversaires. Lord Issa pense que c'était le parcours classique du dj à l'époque. Toujours cette même année les Blacks Soly, organisateurs de soirées à Paris (dont les célèbres matinées du dimanche au chapelais), recherchaient des jeunes dj pour faire peau neuve et de fil en aiguille il se retrouva à animer la plus part des grandes soirées à Paris.

A l'époque, il n'y avait pratiquement que des dj's HIP HOP excepté 1 ou 2 qui mixaient de l'Afro-caraïbeenes. Étant lui même un dj HIP HOP, fan de reggae dancehall il va se faire un nom en se différenciant des djs les plus actifs de l'époque comme dj Noise,dj Spank,Cut Killer,Deenasty ou dj Clyde. Donc, lors de ces soirées il mixait des sélections dancehall plus pointues.

A 20 ans le virus est dans le sang de Lord Issa, il s'achète alors sa première paire de MK2 d'occasion. En 1995 il rejoint le 360 social club aujourd'hui rebaptisé 360 communications,ces derniers créeront d'ailleurs la première street team de France et le premier réseau de distribution des mythiques mix-tape passe-passe,des plus grands dj new yorkais dont Issa était le responsable de la distribution. Il laisse le blaze de Baxter et officie désormais sous le nom de Lord Issa. C'est en plus la divine providence qui va l'aider à progresser : en 1996 il prend résidence pour des matinées hip-hop et afro dans un club africain réputé, l'Alizée club où il rencontre dj Iso, avec qui il démarrera peu de temps après des soirées hip hop rnb tous les mardis, qui deviendrons une référence. Il sortira les premières mix-tapes ragga hip-hop « Natural Selections » et suivra la célébrissime «Opération coup de poing » véritable compilation rap français, qui permis de découvrir les collectifs tels que Mafia K'1 Fry et Fonky Family. « Opération Coup De Poing » a été la première mix tape 100% française avec des rappeurs comme Ärsenik, Ali de Lunatic, Oxmo, Les Sages Po', Pit Baccardi, Le Rat Luciano, Rohff et bien d'autres.

Après avoir fait connaître son nouveau nom un peu partout, le Lord croise la route du Mastermind Kenzy, fondateur du Secteur Ä qui lui proposa de devenir le dj des Nèg'Marrons et du Secteur Ä.
D'ailleurs, il fera bénéficier de ses talents à d'autres artistes tels que Rap'Dezé et Teemour .
L'année d'après il formera le collectif Natural Dee Jayz, d'abord avec 8 membres puis finalement 5 Lord Issa le « caméléon polyvalent », DJ Cream qui bosse avec Oxmo Puccino, DJ Phaxx dj de FDY phenomen, DJ Noise qui travaille avec le Ménage à 3, ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />la Clinique et Première Classe et DJ Iso spécialiste des soirées Afro-Américaine.

En 1998 le 22 et 23 mai on était deux grands jours pour Lord Issa et le Secteur Ä.
A la foi anniversaire des 150 ans de l'abolition de l'esclavage mais aussi deux concerts
D'anthologie à l'Olympia du Secteur Ä au grand complet et pour la première fois sur une scène tous ensemble.

Hyperactif, il enchaîne avec un nouveau challenge : « Couvre Feu », une émission de radio HIP HOP et DANCEHALL de référence tous les mercredis sur Skyrock ( www.skyrock.com) qu'il démarre en 1999 avec Jacky Brown des Nèg'Marrons et les Natural Djz. Ils en profitent pour y inviter des artistes de tous horizons, du rap au ragga en passant par la musique africaine, en tout éclectisme.
Vient par la suite un autre challenge de dj qu'il relève bien sur, faire des scratchs et des animations façon dj Clue sur Le premier album de Teemour dont il deviendra aussi le dj. Toujours prêt à représenter et à donner un coup de main, Lord Issa collabore avec Bisso Na Bisso, pour leur concert unique au zénith de Paris.

2000 l'année du « bilan », Jacky et Ben-j sorte leurs deuxième album qui sera double disque d'or, une longue tournée avec deux formations : musiciens et dj s'entame dans toute la France. Quelques mois plus tard le magazine Reggae Massive fait appel à ses compétences pour chroniquer la rubrique des singles dancehall, l'année suivante il continuera cette même expérience mais cette fois-ci avec le légendaire magazine l'Affiche.

2001 c'est la sortie de « Première Classe volume 2 les face a face du rap français » dont il fait l'intro avec dj Poska qui sera aussi disque d'or. Quelques mois plus tard il commence à faire une série de medleys « rhythm choice » pour le label ragga Backchich records. Les mois passent, les soirées et les scènes se succèdent à travers la France, l'Europe et l'Afrique.

2002 fut l'explosion du ragga en France le phénomène dancehall touche tous les foyers. Les compilations ragga mixé par des dj's se succèdent. Autorité du milieu hip hop/ragga, il est très sollicité pour faire une compilation officielle. La maison de disque Warner Music le contact pour faire sa compile. Et le voilà mixant avec ses 45 tours la « Natural Ragga Party »un feu d'artifice dancehall et ragga hip hop, sélectionnés par « le DJ qui met le plus de dancehall dans les soirées hip hop ».
Toujours cette même année Pit Baccardi fait appel à ses services pour la tournée de son nouvel opus « Le poids des mots ».Reconnu et adulé comme dj, il est aussi plébiscité pour ses interventions médiatiques et chroniques en tant que présentateur de l'émission « Hit Rap » sur Traces Tv.< STRONG>

2003 sort le 3ème album « Héritage » des Nég'Marrons qui entament une longue tournée de show case et de concert dans toutes les salles, discothèques de France et de Navarre qui prendra fin en août 2004.Pendant cette été démarre l'enregistrement d'un projet colossal la réunion du collectif Noyau Dur,Pit Baccardi,Arsenik et les Nég 'Marrons l'album sera terminé a la fin de l'été 2005.Fin 2005 sort l'album éponyme du Noyau Dur.

Début 2006 Lord Issa et Dj Poska arpentent l'hexagone avec le collectif Noyau Dur pour une longue tournée rapologiques.
En fevrier 2007 DJ Lord Issa a été élu meilleur dj lors la première cérémonie française qui récompense les artistes hip hop de l'année
Le Lord est aussi connu pour ses premières parties enflammées de stars internationales. Il a ainsi ouvert les scènes de Akon,T.O.K, Red Rat, Tyrese, Keith Sweat, Mobb Deep, Dru Hill, Joe,
Fat Joe, Keith Murray, Das Efx, Lords Of The Underground...

Il mixe dans les plus grandes villes de France :
(Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille, Nice, Nantes, Rouen, Rennes,
Strasbourg, Montpellier, La Rochelle, Orléans, Quimper, Grenoble, la Corse, Poitiers….)

Mais si Lord Issa est une référence à la Française, il s'exporte aussi dans les festivals et soirées aux quatre coins du monde :

French Dj D'Ego started mixing in '96 and has been a member of 'Get Le Crew ' since '99.

As a Hip-Hop Lover he touched all the aspects of the culture but he was more attracted by the art of DJ’ing.
He putted his first ‘scratch’ in Studio on the first Rap Record made in Belgium called ‘Brussel Rap Convention’ and then became the Dj author compositor of the Famous group ‘Benny B’. (First on the chart during three years in France and Belgium).
When the group split he went on the be a big club dj and to this day he continues to tour around the world .
To introduce him to y'all we'll post his first and most searched after mixtape called ' special r&b 1'. When this tape hit the streets of Brussels by 99 it was realy the BOMB. You could hear it everywhere banging from windows, cars, it just was all over the place.
It was the first time we had a real blend tape over here that was so good mixed and that actually contained some real blends. Some of those blends and breaks went on to be sold on the Transformers vynils, others have been lost by time ( this tape was never reedited)..

DJ LBR was without a doubt one of the best dj's in France during the 90's.

French dmc vice-champion in 88, that year also marks his radio debut at radio Nova . Founding member of the double h dj crew dj LBR crosses the Atlantic in 1998 to sign to the famous AV8 record label (one of the famous party record labels in New York), where he becomes their main act along with Crooklyn Clan and Fatman Scoop.

Unfortunately over the years he turned commercial and switched styles. He is now a house music dj.

Lucky for us he made a good series of mixtapes, the ' Down with the King' series wich will also feature on this blog but as a treat we first serve you his first tape that came out in 97.

A nice little hip-hop gem with freestyles from the likes of Gravediggaz, Sages Poetes de la Rue , Kohndo and a smooth selection perfectly mixed by LBR.

Dj Iron has been an household name in the Belgian hip-hop scene for many years. Originating from the Belgian costal area he started mixing at an early 15 years old. He soon began making his own mixtapes wich he first distibuted at school and to his friends. He quickly made a name with his tapes wich where being sold through Ghent and the rest of Flanders.
Started producing some years later he is known for his raw & funky tracks wich would take him on to produce tracks for US rappers like El Gant, Planet Asia, Jamalski, Tableek & El Da Sensei.

What happens when you put the two best French mc's and the best dj together to make a tape?

Chances are you get a classic tape.

And this one is pure classic. This tape dissapearing over the years added more weight to its legendary status it already had when it came out in 1995.

The first one of a serie of tapes where Cut Killer invited rappers on his mixtapes, those tapes combined their freestyles with the best tracks of the moment cutted and mixed together by France's number 1.

East , a long time friend of Cut Killer got the honour to be the first guest alongside with Fabe. You get a great freestyle from them followed with some bangers of the moment from artists like KMD, Kurious & Da King and I .The first side finishes off with a nice reggae-hip hop blend session.

The flipside is more on an R&B tip with some smooth vibes from people like X-Scape , Eric Gable & Angela Winbush.

This mixed all together in true Cut Killer fashion : great cuts & intro's and songs that he pitched to the max to give it a nice New Jack Swing vibe.

This tape was due to be reedited last year but that didn't happen because Fabe stopped rapping and turned into a Muslim cleric. Because of that he didn't want his old projects the be released anymore. To bad for the masses but Tapediggers still got the flava to feed ya mixtape needs!

Make sure you cop this one, fat fat tape !

This tape is one of the most legendary tapes ever released in France.

The title translates as Fuck the French Music and relates to the classic French music style wich is quite opposed to the hardcore French rap you hear on this tape.

This is a true concept tape with a fantastic intro where you hear the dj scratching on rappers insulting classic French music through his cuts, the background music of the intro is also the instrumental of Shitsquad wich starred on the Chronique de Mars compilation and is one of the biggest hits ever in French rap.

The rest of the tape is simply the best French rappers of that era and both dj's Bots & Cream putting big work in providing nice cuts and raw mixing.

If you want an introduction to French rap make sure you cop this one!

This was released on the Passe-Passe label in the spring of 1998 and was a massive hit throughout France,Belgium,Switzerland & Quebec.

It's time for a little presentation of Belgian hip-hop legend Dj Grazzhoppa.

Active in the hip-hop scene since the mid eighties , he started with TLP Belgium's first hip hop band 'Rhyme Cut Core'. Being skillfull on the turntables as he is he became European Dmc champion in 1991.
He was also the first Belgian dj who made mixtapes ( to my knowledge) and was active with Belgium's most known hip hop group De Puta Madre.
Besides being a great dj he is also a producer.He worked together with Greedy Fingers ,Blade, Mf Doom,Necro....the list is endless.

His latest work include his dj big band where he putted some of the best dj's in the world together and formed a 'big band' wich has been touring all over since a couple of years, more info on this dj bigband on http://www.djbigband.com/.
He has a new album comming out called Gemini, a soulfull collaboration with his spouse, samples can be listened on his myspace page.

But as you know here at Tapediggers we're all about mixtapes and Grazz produced a lot of them, and we can truly say they are quality tapes : the selections, the ideas,the concept, the crazy cuts...nothing more to add than just cop this shit and see how a mixtape really should be!

Cut Killer is the most skilled mixtape dj in Europe and the most known hip-hop dj from France .

You may know him from his recent work with Big Dawgs Pitbulls but that is just some wack shit compared to what he used to do at parties and mixtapes in the 90's.

He started making hip-hop tapes in 93 , one of the first in France alongside Dj Clyde, and made a name with his legendary tapes where he invited some of the biggest names of that time .

He also had a famous radio show on Radio Nova , some of these shows can be found on this blog .

Some of you may also know him from his appearance in the cult movie La Haine , where you see him scratching and blending big's machine gun funk on Edith Piaf & Krs One - Sound of tha police.

This time we got some exclusive shit for the dancehall massive out there.

A tape we copped some 10 years ago in Jamaica . A party tape where the two biggest Jamaican soundsystems clash and some of the best artists of that time come on stage.

It was a time when the brukout and the bookshelf riddim were the biggest tunes in a Jamaica and Bounty Killer and Beenie Man were rivals for the title of King of The Dancehall.

At Tapediggers we were quite surprised seeing Tapemasta putting a Dj HMD mixtape on his blog.
Dj HMD is a dj from our city Brussels who is quite controversial. Controversial because at one time in the ninetees he was flooding the market with cheap tapes where he just putted the newest releases on without doing more work to actually mix the songs , at that time lots of people like us weren't down with that kind of mass production...
But HMD did also some special series where he always made a nice selection so we tought maybe we'll hit you with one of these.
This one is a special New Jack Swing , with some quite rare gems on it .
For the younger folks , new jack swing is the music you hear when you play radio CRS on GTA San Andreas !
